The Secret to Your Policy Success—Right Here
Collaborating for Success: Building Strong Coalitions That Get Results
Hi everyone,
Policy advocacy is rarely a solo journey. The most impactful change often comes from coalitions—groups of people and organisations uniting behind a shared goal to amplify their voices and efforts. But building and managing a coalition isn’t always straightforward. It takes strategy, coordination, and a strong foundation of trust to succeed.
In this edition, I’ll share practical steps for identifying potential coalition partners, strategies for managing group dynamics, and tips to align everyone on a common purpose.
Why Coalitions Matter in Advocacy
Coalitions allow you to:
Pool resources and expertise.
Broaden your reach and influence.
Present a united front that’s harder for decision-makers to ignore.
Done right, a coalition can magnify your impact and open doors to opportunities that might be out of reach on your own.
1. Identifying Potential Coalition Partners
To build a successful coalition, you first need to identify the right partners. Here’s how:
Look for Common Ground: Seek organisations or individuals with overlapping goals or complementary expertise. Even if their main focus is different, find areas of alignment.
Prioritise Credibility: Choose partners who bring legitimacy and trust to the table—they’ll strengthen the coalition’s overall influence.
Diversity Matters: A coalition with a mix of perspectives and backgrounds can be more innovative and impactful, as long as shared goals are clear.
2. Managing Dynamics and Aligning on Shared Goals
Coalitions thrive on collaboration, but they can falter if dynamics aren’t carefully managed. Keep these strategies in mind:
Establish Clear Roles and Responsibilities: From the outset, agree on who will lead, coordinate, and carry out specific tasks. Clarity reduces misunderstandings.
Create a Shared Vision: Ensure all members are aligned on the coalition’s purpose and long-term goals. Regular check-ins can help maintain this focus.
Communicate Regularly: Open communication keeps everyone informed, engaged, and invested. Use meetings, emails, or shared platforms to keep the conversation flowing.
Resolve Conflicts Quickly: Differences of opinion are inevitable. Address them head-on, focusing on shared goals rather than individual disagreements.
3. Learning From Success Stories
Here’s a quick example from my own experience:
While working on mental health and suicide prevention, I built a coalition of mental health organisations to address strategic policy. By aligning on a shared goal—we are combining our resources and expertise, ultimately working together to influence mental health policy.
This coalition is working because:
Each member brought unique strengths to the table.
We maintained a clear focus on our shared objective.
Open communication and trust allowed us to navigate challenges together.
Coalitions like this demonstrate that collaboration can achieve more than any single organisation could alone.
